If you're looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and question everything you thought you knew about disability, "Out of My Mind" is a must-read. Melody's voice feels so real and immediate, you'll be cheering for her successes and aching with her frustrations. This story will most likely challenge your assumptions and change the way you see the world. A powerful experience for young readers and adults alike!
Melody Brooks is a strong character you won't soon forget. She's trapped in a body that doesn't work, surrounded by people who underestimate her intelligence. But Melody's brilliant mind shines through, and her struggle for communication is heartbreaking yet inspiring. "Out of My Mind" isn't just a story about disability, it's about the power of the human spirit. Perfect for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. This will help you explore the world of someone having a disability and for those who care for them as well.
Before reading "Out of My Mind," you may think you have an understanding about people with disabilities. Maybe even an understanding about those who take care of them too. It could be parents, it could be friends and it also can be caregivers. Melody's story blew that wide open; it exposed all the subtle prejudices and assumptions I didn't even know I held. This book delivers a powerful message about empathy, the importance of seeing beyond appearances, and giving everyone a voice. I wish I'd read this as a child!
I personally have a daughter with mild cerebral palsy, and after reading this book it helped me to communicate with my daughter on another level. I think this book should be a marker for the schools to have the students read, so that many children and young adults can be open to to hers who were born with additional challenge's.
Excited to read this!
Added to my list !!! Must read
